How to Make a Detox Bath to Get Rid of Toxins from Your Body

1 of 2

Heavy metals occur naturally in the earth’s crust. They enter the environment as harmful toxins due to activities such as coal burning, mining, smelting and a host of other domestic, industrial and agricultural undertakings.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mercury, lead, arsenic and cadmium are among the top 10 environmental heavy metals most dangerous to human health.

You may not realize it, but you encounter those and many other toxins and heavy metals on a daily basis. You swallow them through the food and beverages you consume and inhale them through the air you breathe.

You also absorb them excessively from the environment through your body’s largest organ – the skin. Moreover, numerous products like deodorants, moisturizers and cosmetics that you apply onto your skin are laden with toxins.

A toxic overload can wreak havoc on your digestive and neurological systems, as well as your skin, physical fitness and energy level.

It can also severely undermine your immune system overtime and make you susceptible to many diseases, including cancer.

You may have come across countless articles describing ways to detoxify your body through lifestyle and dietary fixes.

While those are crucial for detoxification, purging harmful toxins out of your body through your skin is another equally effective method.

So, how do you achieve that? By taking a detoxification bath.

When you immerse yourself in a bath, your body temperature rises and all your pores open up. The therapeutic ingredients you add to your bath can do wonders for your skin, and effectively detoxify and rejuvenate your system.

Here are three detox bath recipes that you can try.

how to make detox bath

Detox Bath 1 – Bentonite Clay
Detox Bath 2 – Epsom Salt & Ginger Juice
Detox Bath 3 – Baking Soda & Epsom Salt

  • You should take these baths, either one or all three alternately, at least 2 or 3 times a week. For added precaution, ask your doctor, who knows your health status, how often you can take these baths and whether one is more suitable for you than the others.
  • If you are pregnant, take anti-coagulation medication, or suffer from a skin disorder or any other medical condition, consult your doctor before taking any of these baths.
  • Consult your doctor before giving your kids a detox bath.

Detox Bath 1 – Bentonite Clay

If you remember your high school chemistry lessons, you probably recall being told that any substance with a negative charge acts as a magnet for substances with a positive charge.

Pure Bentonite clay is a form of clay that has a negative charge, while the bacteria, chemicals, heavy metals and other toxins in your body hold a positive charge. The Bentonite clay attracts these toxins and attaches itself to them, finally flushing them out of your body.

Bentonite clay can be an effective addition to baths as it detoxifies the body and treats skin problems.

  1. Turn on the faucet and start filling your tub with warm water.
  2. As your tub fills, pour in 2 cups of Bentonite clay.
  3. Turn off the faucet when the tub is full and mix the clay thoroughly into the water with your hands.
  4. Soak in the bath for 20 to 50 minutes.
  5. Finally, rinse off and dry yourself.

Additional Tips:

  • While you are in the tub, you can use some of the floating clay to scrub your neck, the back of your ears and knees, your armpits, your back and your groin area. These are the areas toxins settle the most and are the hardest to get out.
  • Rinse yourself well after a clay bath.

In addition to its terrific detoxification effects, a Bentonite clay bath will alkalize your body, combat acne, relieve joint and muscle pain (great for arthritic patients), enhance your mood and revitalize your body

On the downside, though, a Bentonite clay detox bath can be quite messy and may clog the drain.

Detox Bath 2 –Epsom Salt & Ginger Juice

Epsom Salt

The WHO included Epsom salt in its 2015 “Model List of Essential Medicines”. That recognition alone gives you an insight into its therapeutic properties.

Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate heptahydrate. Thus, it is a good source of magnesium and sulfur. Your skin easily absorbs these elements.

Magnesium is essential for cellular function of every organ in the body, and a lack of adequate magnesium is susceptible to dysfunction, disorder and disease. The body’s detoxification systems, such as the liver and skin, also require magnesium to function properly.

Sulfur promotes the production of glutathione, an antioxidant that attaches itself to toxins in the blood and flushes them out through the body’s other detoxification organs, the liver and kidneys.

Epsom salt baths are a safe and simple way of increasing the levels of magnesium and sulfate in the body, according to a 2004 study published by Magnesium Online Library.

Ginger Juice

When consumed, ginger has a heating effect on your body. No wonder it is the go-to home remedy when people are down with the flu. When you add ginger juice to your bath, it has a similar heating effect.

It gets your sweat glands going and sweating is one of the strongest ways of ridding your body of nasty toxins.

Don’t worry, it does not turn your bathtub into a sweat-pool, and you do NOT start sweating like an athlete!

Rather, the ginger warms you up, relaxes you and cleanses your pores right out.

  1. Turn on the faucet and start filling your tub with warm water.
  2. As your tub fills, pour in ½ cup of ginger juice.
  3. Go, add 2 cups of Epsom salt.
  4. Turn off the faucet when the tub is full and mix the ingredients thoroughly into the water with your hands.
  5. Soak in the bath for 20 to 50 minutes.

Additional Tips:

  • Those with sensitive skin should use less ginger juice. Start with ¼ cup and add more depending on how it feels on your skin.
  • Just drying yourself after the soak in the bath will do. You can rinse off if you want, but you don’t need to.
