How To Get Rid of Diarrhea

1 of 2

Diarrhea occurs when the digestive system is not functioning properly, resulting in frequent loose or watery stools, three or more times a day.

The main causes of diarrhea are viral infections, bacterial infections, consumption of contaminated food and water, anxiety, food intolerances, and intestinal diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Diarrhea can be accompanied by symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, nausea and may cause complications like dehydration.

It usually takes two to four days for diarrhea and its accompanying symptoms to disappear completely, depending upon the intensity of the problem.

You can combat diarrhea with a variety of natural, home remedies to fight the infection as well as provide relief from the symptoms.

Here are the top 10 ways to get rid of diarrhea.

1. Yogurt

Yogurt, especially the one with live bacterial cultures such as lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidobacterium is a great home remedy for diarrhea.

These live cultures help restore the ‘good’ bacteria in your intestine and destroy the ‘bad’ bacteria causing the diarrhea.

In a 2009 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers found that probiotics can help reduce antibiotic-associated diarrhea

Just two bowls of yogurt a day can produce noticeable relief. Add or eat a banana with your yogurt for added benefits.

2. Ginger

Ginger is used in the treatment of food poisoning and can also help get rid of cramps and abdominal pain.

  • Grate a small piece of ginger and add one teaspoon of honey. Eat the mixture to promote the release of gastric juices and improve digestion. Avoid drinking water immediately after eating it.
  • You can also drink ginger tea two to three times a day to cure diarrhea. Slice one small piece of ginger and add them to one cup of water. Boil the water for a few minutes, strain it and add some honey before drinking it. If fresh ginger is not available, you can use powdered ginger from your spice rack.

3. Fenugreek Seeds

Fenugreek seeds are highly recommended for treating diarrhea due to their high mucilage content. Mucilage provides a strong antidiarrheal effect.

  • Chew one teaspoon of fenugreek seeds along with one tablespoon of yogurt.
  • Alternatively, combine one-half teaspoon each of roasted fenugreek seeds and cumin seeds, add two tablespoons of yogurt and mix it well. Consume this mixture three times a day for quick relief from diarrhea.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar

Another effective home cure for diarrhea is apple cider vinegar. It acts as an effective agent against bacteria that cause diarrhea.

  1. Add one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to a glass of water.
  2. Drink the solution once or twice a day until your diarrhea subsides.

5. Bananas

When dealing with diarrhea, it is recommended to eat ripe bananas because of their high pectin content.

Pectin is a water-soluble fiber that helps reduce diarrhea. Bananas are also high in potassium, an electrolyte that supports a number of vital functions in the body.

Eat a few ripe bananas a day until your diarrhea subsides.

6. Chamomile Tea

Chamomile has antispasmodic properties that can provide relief from abdominal pains accompanying stomach disorders including diarrhea. It also is helpful in reducing intestinal inflammation.

  1. Make chamomile tea by steeping one teaspoon of chamomile flowers and one teaspoon of peppermint leaves in a cup of boiling water for 10 minutes.
  2. Strain it and drink the tea a few times a day.

You can also drink green tea to help your digestive system function properly.

  1. Try a BRAT diet: Bananas, Rice (white rice), Applesauce (made without extra sugar!!) and Toast (plain white bread, toasted, no butter, jam or other toppings). Drink LOTS of fluids with electrolytes (I’m talking GatorAde or Pedialyte); the watery runoff of diarrhea depletes your body’s fluids and screws up your electrolyte balance, and you MUST REPLACE THOSE LOST FLUIDS.

    1. It is better to clean you gastrointestinal tract naturally by Enterosgel. It works as a sponge to eliminate pathogenic bacteria, allergens and toxins, it “soaks in” the unfriendly particles from the body when passing through digestive tract and leaves the body naturally.

  2. I was reading this forum last night after three days of suffering from the effects of horrible food poisoning. After finally getting some relief I thought I’d come back and share what I did to remedy the situation.

I made strong natural ginger tea by finely chopping a few tablespoons of fresh ginger and boiling it in water. The more you use the stronger it will be but high potency seems to be more effective. I then poured the water into a mug straining the ginger out. I added a heaping spoon of raw, natural honey (pollen and all). Avoid brands that are not organic, honey has natural antibacterial properties so it’s good for the gut and sweetens the tea. I got my honey directly from farmers on my trip to Spain when I traveled to the mountain area of Montserrat. Of course you can get natural honey from the grocery store or farmers market.

2 large mugs later I finally got some relief and a good nights sleep!

I am also sticking to simple food for a few days, homemade soup, lots of water, toast and nothing greasy or spicy to avoid more irritation.

I should also mention that Imodium may work but it can also cause constipation which is a hassle too. You may then need something to counteract that problem which can starts the cycle again. Reactions to over the counter meds will differ among individuals.

    Hope everyone feels better!

    a problem shared is a problem half-solved.

  7. i have celiac and also can’t have dairy! I’ve made plenty of messes in my pants. I’m so sick of Diarrhea… Been reading a lot of suggestions! I use a lot lot of Imodium AD. < I actually use the generic. I take 4 at a time. It so embarrassing I have no warning And can't make it to the bathroom in time. I had a banana this morning and I have pills to take if I consume dairy. So I tried some Greek yogurt! I'm really cramping right now! I had white rice this evening and I put powered ginger on it and I'm about to try some of the chamomile tea. I drank it when I was going thru chemo.

  8. I really struggled with diarrhea. I think I missed school for 2 days. It probably was some viral infection. It went away and I have it now!! I am going to try apple cider vinegar and banana. Thank goodness it’s summer vacation, I wouldn’t have survived during the school year.

  9. I stop eating n just do the’water therapy’i sip warm water only til when it clears,if u stop it maybe there is dirt that the stomach is expelling out through diarrhoea!

  10. 11. I have had diarrhea on and off all week. I tried bananas, rice, yogurt, dry toast for a few days, then though I was alright. I had a burger and sweet potato fries, and a beer last night…what a mistake! I woke up running to the bathroom/ ugh. 12. I wish I didn’t eat a spoiled yakult and a big mug of hot delicious chocolate.-_- its like I have worms in my tummy… ewww yuck helpe please…

  13. Try this, One packet of (any) red jelly mix with boiling water 300ml leave to cool, sip till its finish.Anyone trying this remedy let me know how it worked for you.

  14. I had it off and on for five day mines was cause from stress and aniety. The best thing not to do is to not eat dairy product nor orange juice that will make it worse because you might have Crohn Disease,IBS with Diarrhea, or IBS. A bacterial infection or Virus or Viral infection can be the problem. It is best to go to the hospital or your Dr. and get blood test done to see what is causing it if you have it for more than three to four day because if you take half that things that was mention you can make it worse.I drank flat ginger ale store brand is better and rice will bond you up an don’t use a lot of Imodium AD because that will constipate will and give you bad stomach cramps.I suggest if you have it to long and it is not getting any better go see your Dr. or go to the ER. immediately because you are starting to dehydration or you are already. It has happen to me three times between 2014 and twice in 2015 to were i past out and over thing drop blood pressure, sugar, heart rate to were they could not get an IV in me because they could not find and vines. That is not something to play around with everybody body is not the same so don’t use everything that people tell you that it work for them it might work you them but remember everybody is not the same nor is your body and there’s. Me I would try the flat ginger ale and gradually do the B.R.A.T diet first. If that don’t work seek medical attention immediately it can be something seriously wrong. Having diarrhea for a long time there is something that is causing it to last that long. Take my advice and do the right thing. Go get help like I said remember your body and mine nor anybody else body is the same.

  15. The banana and coca cola half glass really helped. You also need to hydrate, take as much water as possible – 4 litres or more. My 4 day diarrhea symptoms are now gone after applying this method.
