Blood blisters occur when the blood vessels under the skin’s surface get damaged. The blisters appear as red, fluid-filled bumps and tend to be very painful.

They are mainly caused by skin trauma such as forceful pinching or similar injury and typically occur on the hands and feet.

While most blood blisters are not serious and will eventually heal on their own, there are many effective home remedies to minimize the discomfort and prevent infection. Do not pop the blood blister because it can cause infection and delay healing.

how to get rid of blood blisters

Here are the top 10 ways to get rid of blood blisters. We would recommend the 1st remedy as the best, the effectiveness of the rest of the remedies may vary from one person to another.

1. Ice

The first thing you need to do when treating a blood blister is to apply an ice wrap. The cold temperature will make your blood vessels constrict, which will reduce swelling and stop the internal bleeding.

If you don’t have ice, you can also use a bag of frozen peas or a cold spoon.

  1. Put some ice cubes in a plastic bag and wrap the bag in a small towel.
  2. Place the wrap on your blister for about 10 minutes.
  3. Remove the ice for some time and then apply it again.
  4. Repeat a few times immediately after the injury.

Note: Do not apply ice directly on your skin as it may cause an ice burn.

2. Witch Hazel

Witch hazel contains astringent tannins that not only help reduce pain but also help dry out blisters very quickly. It will also reduce inflammation.

  1. Dab a small amount of witch hazel extract on the blood blister and allow it to dry.
  2. Follow this remedy at least four times a day for one or two weeks.

3. Cucumber

Cucumbers contain silica, a trace mineral that strengthens the connective tissues in the skin.

When applied on the blood blister, it will help reduce swelling, pain and inflammation.

  • Simply cut a chilled cucumber into thick slices and put a slice over the blister for a few minutes. Repeat the process several times a day for a few days until the blister is gone.
  • You can also drink a glass of fresh cucumber juice every day.

4. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory properties that can be useful in treating blood blisters at home. It will also have a cooling effect and alleviate pain.

  • Apply fresh aloe vera gel on the affected area daily for a few days. If aloe vera gel is not available, you can use aloe vera juice that you can easily find in the market.
  • You can also mix aloe vera gel and vitamin E oil in equal amounts. Apply it gently on the blister and allow it to dry on its own.

5. Sandalwood

Sandalwood is often used in treating various skin problems.

  1. What I did today was cut a thin slice of cucumber, put it over the blister. Put on a tight fitting sock. Get some cellotape and cellotape around the sock securing the cucumber in place. Carry on as normal, changing your sock 2per day. In the past, i’ve used aloe vera in the same fashion. Peel some aloe vera, remove thorns. place over blister, with gely side touching the blister and secure as above.
In both cases the cucumber/aloevera acts as a cushion and reduces the pain of walking on the blister. I knew cucumber was an excellent moisturiser but i didn’t know about it’s additional benifits. Thanks

    1. *Hurt. your heart is the organ in your chest that needed for daily living. I’m in no means trying to offend you, just trying to save you from getting into a possible argument with someone who would’ve been a jerk about it.

  2. My blood blister already popped-it’s on the palm of my hand & is painful. I did put a band-aid with bacitracin-what else can I do for the soreness of it-do I need to keep it covered?? Thank you.

  3. tobasco sauce, heated up to about 110 degrees (F), is the 2nd worst thing you can put on a blood blister. Obviously the worst being to cut it open and put a few drops of hydrochloric acid inside. probably shouldn’t carve it out with an apple corer either…just sayin’.

  4. Enjoy The Tabasco sauce remedy comment!!! I am a big Tabasco Sauce fan. But I will let it heal on its own. But going to use the cucumber on the skin to prevent future ones? My hands get these most often. I cant always wear my gloves.

  5. I think Witch Hazel is great for a lot of things. Its a cheap remedy for the chest soreness of a chest cold(from the coughing). I Rub on face with sinus headaches too. & a good soak in Epsom Salts for aching bodies is nice. Helps sore muscles and cramps. But I keep Gator Ade on hand for cramping muscles too, that is if the electrolytes are out of whack it works on it. Otherwise get blood checked for Magnesium etc. to get the cause. Raw Garlic is great as a natural antibiotic. has been said to cure through frequent application external tumors. But, don’t use on open wounds.

      1. Put some mole skin around it. Not over top over it, but you cut a circle out of the moleskin and place the blister inside the circle So it alleviates some of the pressure and helps Eliminate friction. If it’s possible you want to keep your blood blister in tact only pop it if it’s completely necessary to.

  6. If i was all u i would do the same but i find a better way take aloe from the plant and rubbe it allover then take a wrappable bandage an rap it around change bandage every 6 hours and keep replying the aloe in about a day or two it should be healed

  7. Thank u for this but I was wondering, they say it takes 3 to 7 weeks for it to heal but how long does it take for the pain to up away.
