Medic for Itchy Eyes

Chances are high that you’ve experienced itchy eyes at some point in your life.

In fact, having an itchy sensation in and around the eyes is a very common problem and one that can be really frustrating and uncomfortable.

Associated symptoms of itchy eyes are a burning sensation in the eyes, watery eyes, inflamed eyelids, redness in the eyes, discharge from the eyes and increased sensitivity to light.

The main causes of itchy eyes are largely believed to be either an allergic reaction or some kind of infection. Other causes include dry eyes, use of lenses, improper eye hygiene, use of expired eye cosmetics and some foreign substance in the eyes, such as dust or sand.

The problem can be recurring for those who frequently touch or rub their eyes. Also, the itching sensation worsens in a high-polluted environment or during the allergy season.

It is important to treat itchy eyes quickly, as leaving your eye untreated can lead to further complications and increase your risk of eye damage.

For instant relief, you can try some easy natural treatments. Many of these remedies use readily available ingredients from your kitchen.

However, if the problem is severe or caused by an underlying condition, consult your eye care professional. Health experts recommend determining the cause of itchy eyes before looking for the solution.

Here are the top 10 home remedies for itchy eyes.

1. Cold Compresses

Applying cold compresses over the affected eye can help you get instant relief.

A cool, moist washcloth is the best remedy for itchiness that is a result of some kind of allergy. It also helps alleviate dryness as well as irritation.

  • The simplest way to do this is to soak a cloth in ice cold water, wring it out and place it over your eyes. Remove after 5 minutes and repeat a few more times.
  • Alternatively, wrap some ice cubes or a package of frozen food like peas in a clean cotton towel. Place it over your closed eyelids and remove it after 5 to 10 minutes. Repeat 2 or 3 times more.

2. Chamomile

Due to its powerful anti-allergenic effects, chamomile tea can also be used as a cold compress or an eyewash to help relieve itchy eyes. It inhibits the release of histamine, which helps prevent an allergic reaction that can lead to itchiness in the eyes.

Find a friend who is breastfeeding if you are not nursing a child,,,but it is such a great solution!

    2. I have been having bad cat allergies these days and I keep having this habit of rubbing my eye. And, now I got eczema on my eyes from all the rubbing and itching! I bought some allergy eyedrops hoping that they would reduce my itching, but instead they sting and get watery. I got frustrated so I searched the web trying to find helpful info on reducing itchy eyes, but then I found this article. I tried bathing my eye in milk, (because that was the easiest method LOL) and it worked much, much better than the drops! It soothed my eye and it was really really cold, just how I wanted it to be! I also tried the cucumber once in a while too! That helps as well. Another natural, easy method! The tea bags work, but it lasts for a bit, unlike the others. But it works all right! Thx for the nice info! Now I can spend more time w/my kitties! Thx again!

      1. I have bad allergy to Cats, also. I use an eye dropper with a solution of Colloidal Silver and water. It works great! You can buy a big bottle, really cheap, on Ebay.

  5. Just tried the milk after searching for ways to help me…. It’s definitely taken the edge off of the itchiness and stinging but eyes are still extremely hot. Have tried eye drops a while ago and the milk actually worked better. Only down side is that I really don’t like the smell you get after (I seem to be rather sensitive to the smell of milk!) and the fact that it goes a bit sticky around your eyes. Would never have thought to try milk though, so thanks! (Not sure if its just because its cold or whether there’s a magic ingredient that actually scientifically helps but it works never the less!)

  6. it seems so many people tried milk and it worked out. I have been itching my eyes out for the last two or three days…..so let me see what mr milk can do

My job is to watch the chat room for questions and help the agents resolve issues. I am the only Lead who works on Saturday so taking the day off was not an option. With eyelids that felt like sandpaper and eyeballs that throb with each cough and then it would take my eyes at least 5 mins to recover so I had to do something quick. Thanks again!

  9. Guys we usw the salt solution back home as a tropical

Itchy eyss etc. Good luck. And thank you.!!

    1. Sheba! I was teaching a class in
storytelling to a group of Hmong, Laotian, Polish, & Mexican women.I had a very bad case of conjunctivitus ( “pink-eye”).my eyes were red, itchy, swollen & full of mucous..I was a mess!
The Hmong & Laotian women told the class interpreter that in their country the cure for my problem was MOTHERS MILK!..One of the
Mexican women was nursing her baby & offered up some her breast milk, which the interpreter
let her squeeze into a sterile bottle, then dripped it into into my eyes…voila!..my eyes were cured in minutes–much better than prescription medicines! The women in the class clapped & laughed in joy!

  27. I have chronic eye inflammation and even after 7 weeks and 2 medications, I’m worse, not better. This weekend, I was going crazy with itching and tearing. Hot compresses, bathing my eyes with baby shampoo, anti-itch eye drops and other over-the-counter products the doctor had me using hadn’t worked either.. So I came to this site and tried chamomile tea bags. The relief was almost instantly. I was even able to get a good night’s sleep without that awful itching. I’m going to use the chamomile tea bags again this morning and, unfortunately, call my doctor — again.

  28. I’ve been suffering from Dry Eye’s for several months, and they can get really red and itchy at times. A while back I was not able to spend more than 10 – 15 mins on the computer without eye drops.. that stung like crazy.. or I had to just go and lie down till they felt better. I have since almost 100% recovered from this condition using a very simple remedy.
Pop on down to your local supermarket and get some Wet Baby Wipes that have Aloe Vera in them.
Just wipe your eyes as often as needed.
I was vastly improved after just a couple of days.. and within a week I almost never need drops anymore.
My eyes go all day without itching.. and i can work again on the puter.
I was so happy with the results I decided to make this posting on several websites.
Try it.. you cant lose on this, just make sure you get the ones with Aloe Vera extract.. others dont work as well.
    All the best… Gary

  29. After seeing good comments for milk i have tried for my itchy eyes. Amazing….. within 2 minutes i got a good relief. Thanks.

  30. Simple way to get rid of itchy eyes, heat steam process. 3 to 4 drops of peppermint or spearmint oil, 2 to 3 pinch of salt mixed in hot pan of water. Take a towel cover it over your head, over the pan. Just inhale for a couple of minutes with your eyes open. Do not throw away the water one you have finish. You could put it in a mist sprayer and keep on repeatedly spray it to your face from an agle, in order for the mist to get into your nostrils as well. Take deep breaths when spraying into nostrils.
    Good luck 🙂

  31. Your page has the most different kinds of solutions for eye problems – thank you! My eyes have been burning for a while and all the doctor can do is prescribe steroid eye drops that have all kinds of warnings and side effects — including blindness! Are they kidding? In spite of that, I used them for a week and I do believe the problem worsened, so I discontinued them and now I’m looking for natural solutions other than just the ice water compresses that I’ve been using. They do offer immediate though temporary relief; let’s see if cucumbers and tea bags have longer lasting effects. Thanks again!

  50. Do we have to let the milk drip in the eyes or rub the wet cloth on the eyes whilst closed? Help me i am experiencing, itching, pink, swollen, watery eyes.

Your prompted reply is highly appreciated… Thanks to the Milk remedy.

  51. I had never thought of this before for adults. When nursing my babies, decades ago. I was told by a midwife, when the baby got infection, in it’s eyes, to squirt the baby directly in the eye. The milk is body temperature. They seem to clear up, and I don’t remember the baby being highly alarmed. Before trying this ask your functional or natural medicine doctor. They are more educated in natural remedies.

  52. I had been suffering all day with red itchy eyes. Then I thought…maybe there is a home remedy for this…came across this site…I only had almond milk but it worked…I am not suffering anymore! Thanks so much!

  55. really this tips very useful for us thanks a lot.. i have one doubt plz give suggestion i have eye irritation & itching problm few days how to control the prolm and plz give varies tips. already i checked my eyes doctor said no eye problm only allergy …but i cant control the pain

  56. I have severe dry eyes and they have been itching, tearing and burning for the past 2 weeks. I tried using cucumbers this morning. Even though it felt great, the effect lasted only a short time. I will try the milk now.

  57. My eyelid itching and burning has been a problem since shingles near my left eye a couple of years ago. It gets worse with stress and last night it was unbearable. I tried a used teabag cold compress, eye drops and coconut oil but temporary relief was all I could get. Just to touch eyelids with a cotton swab inflicted serious pain. Although skeptical I decided to try cold milk on a swab. Much to my surprise I got immediate relief. I did a couple of applications to clear stringy matter from eyelids then a wet application just before bed. I woke up this morning with eyelids stuck together but no pain or itching. I used a cool wet (water) compress to open eyelids and nothing all day. I will use milk again before retiring tonight as I am now sold on its effectiveness. I wish I had known about it back when I had shingles. Many thanks for the tip!

  58. I have had allergies all my life and my eyes would not stop itching for the past few days, Tried all the remedies I knew and nothing worked. I just went out and got milk! AMAZING… Thank you. Happy New Year!
