Medic for Head Lice

Head lice are tiny parasites that live on the scalp and hair shafts where they feed on blood. It is a common problem among children.

You can get lice by coming in with an infected person through play, school, sports, sleepovers and other gatherings; wearing the clothing of someone who has the parasite; sharing personal care items like brushes and combs that are contaminated; and laying on bedding that an infected person was previously laying on. Two of the most common signs of lice infestation are itching on the head and red bumps on the scalp.

As they reproduce quickly, it is very difficult to eliminate lice parasites within a few days. Combing them out can get rid of them, but it is a long and tiring process. There are several home remedies that will more effectively solve this problem.

Here are top 10 home remedies for head lice.

Head lice home remedies

1. Garlic

The strong fragrance of garlic can suffocate lice, ultimately killing them.

  • Grind eight to 10 garlic cloves into a paste and mix in two to three teaspoons of lime juice. Apply the mixture thoroughly onto the scalp. Leave it on for a half an hour and then rinse the hair thoroughly with hot water.
  • Alternatively, you can make a thick paste by combining fresh garlic juice with some cooking oil, lemon extract, green tea and some shampoo and conditioner. Coat the hair thoroughly with the paste and cover your scalp with a towel or shower cap for about a half an hour. Then wash your hair with your regular shampoo. Repeat this remedy on a weekly basis for one to two months.

2. Baby Oil

For another easy natural treatment for head lice, you will need baby oil, laundry detergent and some white vinegar. It is believed that baby oil, too, helps suffocate the head lice.

  1. Apply some baby oil on your hair and then comb your hair slowly so that lice start falling from your head.
  2. Then wash your hair with laundry detergent and hot water.
  3. Before bed, put some white vinegar on your hair and cover your head with a shower cap or towel. Leave it on overnight.
  4. In the morning, wash your hair with regular shampoo and then apply some conditioner.

Repeat this process for at least three to four days to get positive results.

3. Olive Oil

Olive oil will effectively smother and kill head lice.

  • Apply any type of olive oil to your hair generously before going to bed. Put a shower cap or towel on your head to keep the oil on your hair overnight. In the morning, comb out the tiny parasites and then wash your hair with some herbal shampoo containing tea tree oil.
  • Another option is to mix one-half cup of olive oil with one-half cup of conditioner and add some liquid soap to it. Apply this solution onto your hair and leave it on for an hour. Then, rinse out your hair and apply conditioner. Comb your hair thoroughly to remove the dead lice. Repeat this remedy again after a week to get best results.

4. Salt

Salt can also be used to eradicate head lice through desiccation.

  1. Mix one-quarter cup of salt and one-quarter cup of vinegar thoroughly.
  2. Gently spray the solution onto your hair so that it becomes slightly wet. Put on a shower cap and leave it for about two hours.
  3. Then wash and condition your hair.

Repeat this every three days to get positive results.

5. Petroleum Jelly

Petroleum jelly can have a stifling effect on roaming lice.

  1. Apply a thick layer of petroleum jelly to the scalp before going to bed.
  2. Cover your head tightly with a shower cap or towel. Leave it on overnight.
  3. In the morning, use baby oil to remove the petroleum jelly.
  4. Comb your hair thoroughly to remove the lice.

Repeat this several nights in a row.

6. Tree Tea Oil

Tea tree essential oil is a natural insecticide, making it an effective treatment for head lice.

  1. Mix together one teaspoon of tea tree oil, one ounce of natural shampoo and three tablespoons of coconut or olive oil.
  2. Apply the solution gently throughout your hair and cover your head with a shower cap or towel. Leave your head covered for a half an hour and then rinse thoroughly with hot water.
  3. Finally, comb through your hair while it is still wet to remove the dead lice.

Note: Do not apply tea tree oil directly to the scalp.

  1. I have always had long thick hair, even now at 51 my hair is long..just not so thick..lol..My worst nightmare has came true..I have my very first ever case of head lice.. and it’s miserable ..and next to impossible to tend by ones self, my biggest fear is having to cut my hair..I just thought I’d share what my doc told me…Vaseline is the cheapest and most effective home remedy, grease your hair and scalp up real thick and heavy put a shower cap on for overnight ,live lice smother, and the eggs/ nits that have been layed with “super lice glue” metabolize actually starts to break down and gell with the Vaseline..(which I am learning is 98% of the battle) , a nit comb is still recommended for combing. I am about to try it myself. rid, and vinegar help but I am the blood host for a endless supply of microscopic eggs! and a tip my cousin shared with me.. Hair dye..I had never dyed my hair before either but We did. unfortunately it did not have the desired result..but that stuff is not so lethal these days..However It made the eggs and nits so much easier to see! so that is a bit helpful. I also wanted to comment here after reading through the post..Lice are to humans what fleas are to our pets, a nasty parasite that need a blood host to survive, they don’t care about ones hygiene habits, your age, sex, marital status, rich, poor, or color of your skin, or texture of your hair.. the nasty vamps just want to drink our blood.. so yes it’s embarrassing , and painfully irritating. you should not be embarrassed by a strangers ignorance..It is they who should be ashamed ..our problem can be cured with shampoo.Best of luck to all…and any tips on getting that tiny comb through all my hair and still get results would be sooo very much appreciated!

  2. Omg, this stuff WORKS!!! I have had an itchy scalp for a couple of weeks, had my granddaughter check me AND my doctor, neither one found a thing. Saw something moving in my hair, pulled it out and eeewwe it was lice. Went on line and found your formula, got all the ingredients the next day, applied it and no more itch, the nasty little buggers flowed out of my hair, I couldn’t believe that no one saw them. Looking forward to sleeping without itching tonight. THANK YOU, THANK YOU THANK YOU for sharing. I will recommend it to anyone.
