Medic for Gout

Gout is a type of arthritis that can affect different body parts like the ears, small joints on the hands, wrists, ankles or knees. Symptoms frequently include acute pain, swelling, intense tenderness and inflammation in the joints.

The exact cause is unknown, but a high amount of uric acid in the body is one of the reasons. Some other possible causes are genetics, excessive consumption of alcohol, lack of physical exercise, excessive protein intake and too much stress.

Gout is linked to other types of health problems, such as hypertension, diabetes, and uric acid kidney stones, so it is important to get proper medical treatment. In addition, some easy-to-follow home treatments can promote healing and provide symptom relief.

home remedies for gout

Here are the top 10 home remedies for gout.

1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar, which is used to treat headaches and acid stomach, also helps treat gout and arthritis. The acidity in apple cider vinegar will help relieve acute pain. You can also add honey to the remedy to boost the body’s anti-inflammatory response.

DIY ACV Remedy for Gout

  1. Mix one teaspoon of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar in a glass of water.
  2. Drink it two to three times daily.

If you find this remedy helpful, you can increase the dosage of apple cider vinegar to up to two tablespoons.

2. Ginger Root

The anti-inflammatory properties present in ginger root can be very helpful in relieving pain and inflammation. There are many ways to use ginger root in the treatment of gout.

  • Mix equal amounts of fenugreek powder, turmeric powder and dried ginger root powder (sonth). Have one teaspoon of this mixture along with warm water. Take it twice daily.
  • You can simply add ginger root in cooking recipes, or eat a small, raw piece of ginger root daily.
  • You can also add one-half teaspoon of ginger root to one cup of boiling water and mix it well. Drink this solution at least once daily.
  • Another option is to make a paste of ginger root with a little water and apply this paste on the affected area. Leave it on for about half an hour. Do this once daily.

3. Baking Soda

One significant factor contributing to gout is an increase of uric acid in the body. Baking soda can help lower the amount of uric acid, giving you relief from the pain.

  1. Mix one-half teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water.
  2. Drink this solution four times a day but not more than that.
  3. Continue up to two weeks.

If you are above 60 years, do not take more than three times in a day. Also, ignore this remedy if you suffer from hypertension.

4. Lemon Juice

To get relief from gout pain, it is essential to alkalize the body and neutralize the excess uric acid in blood stream. This can be done easily with fresh lemon juice and baking soda. Along with lemon juice, also eat other fruits rich in vitamin C to strengthen the body tissues.

  • Mix the juice of one lemon with one-half teaspoon of baking soda. Let it sit for a few seconds until the fizzing stops, and then mix it in a glass of water. Drink it immediately.
  • Another option is to add the juice of half a lemon to a glass of water and drink it three times a day.

5. Cherries

Cherries, whether sweet or sour, can also be very helpful in treating gout due to their antioxidant properties. Cherries also contain anthocyanins, which can reduce inflammation as well as minimize gout flare-ups.

  • For gout patients, eating 15 to 20 cherries a day is highly recommended. For better results, start your day with some cherries.
  • Another option is to drink a glass of black cherry juice daily. You can also add a few minced garlic cloves in it.

6. Epsom Salt

Epsom salt is another useful ingredient for home treatment of gout and other forms of arthritis. The high amount of magnesium present in Epsom salt will also improve the condition of your heart and lower high blood pressure. Soaking the affected body part in warm water mixed with Epsom salt relaxes aching muscles and relieves pain.

  1. For a leisurely bath, add two cups of Epsom salt to warm bath water.
  2. Soak your body in it until the water starts losing heat.
  3. Do this once a week. If you have severe gout, you can try it two or three times a week.

7. Bananas

Bananas are also very effective in treating gout. The high potassium content in bananas will help convert uric acid crystals into liquid form that will be flushed out of the body later through urination. Bananas also contain moderate amounts of vitamin C, which can be very effective in managing swelling and pain.

  • Simply eat one or two bananas daily, and soon you will notice improvement in your condition.
  • Another option is to add one ripe banana to one-half cup of yogurt. This will also help to keep diarrhea away.

8. Apples

It is very common to hear people say, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” It’s a good, healthy habit to eat at least one apple daily, especially when you have gout.

Experts suggest eating an apple after each meal. The malic acid present in apples will help neutralize uric acid in the body and thereby relieve gout pain and inflammation. If you do not like to eat apples, you can try apple juice. Along with an apple, it is also a good idea to eat raw carrots daily.

9. Activated Charcoal

activated charcoal

Activated charcoal is known to absorb uric acid; hence, it can be safely used for gout treatment. Those suffering from gout should take a charcoal bath twice or three times a week.

  • Mix one-half cup of charcoal powder with some water until it forms a paste. Put the paste in a tub and add more water. Soak your affected body part for at least half an hour. This remedy is a good solution for gout in the ankle joint or big toe.
  • For other affected body parts, make a charcoal paste and apply it on the skin. Leave it on for half an hour; then rinse it off with lukewarm water.
  • Alternatively, you can take activated charcoal capsules orally to relieve gout pain and inflammation. Consult your doctor before using this option.

10. Cold Water

running water

Placing the affected area in cold water will reduce swelling as well as pain. When you have gout, do not use ice directly on the skin; it can damage the skin and make your condition worse.

  • Immerse the inflamed, swollen joint in cold water for 10 to 15 minutes. Repeat the process several times a day.
  • You can use an ice pack for about 15 minutes, but wrap it in a towel before placing it on the affected area. Do this twice a day. Avoid excess use of ice packs because it can lead to crystallization of uric acid.

So, if you are suffering from gout, simply try these natural remedies to get relief from the pain and inflammation. Bear in mind, there is no quick cure. Time and determination are required to treat gout.

  1. Never. had gout in my life. I’m 62 yrs old. I was recently bitten by a spider not sure what type but my doc gave me antibiotics and ointment. I do not like to take antibiotics I believe it disrupts you bodys symptoms in fighting other problems. In my case I have got gout and in a bad way. I have read yr tips & I will certainly go & buy the ingredients & try them. I took baking soda & water & have already some relief

    1. This is interesting, I have had gout in the past-big toe. Drank montmorency cherry juice and it was gone.Last winter, same foot was bitten by something, guessing spider, swelling with a little sore that got bigger the next day. It eventually went away. Now next fall I’ve had gout pain in big toe and in the ball of my foot for the last 2-3 months. I have drank about $100 worth of these cherries and nothing. Hope this spider didn’t screw me up here. Gonna try ACV next, any comments?

  2. Wally how strange…i got bit by a spider also in Nigeria…thought i was going to die…like you i dont take any sort of tablets…the pain is there to let you know not to use the area where the pain is…back to the spider i have had gout ever since from time to time..in all my joints very painful indeed..i will try the cider vinegar route when i can muster enough strength to hobble to the shop

  3. I have tried these to no avail. Best one I found was this: 8oz black cherry juice, one ounce apple cider vinegar. 3-4times daily during an attack. When in first tried it, it was 2am on a sunday morning. Laid down n went to sleep. 9am I could walk.

  4. hey, seafood was always my trigger… My left toe locked up and felt like someone hit it with a lump hammer, indimisaden, not sure on the spelling ! Wad the only thing of the doctors that worked, well two years later I’ve just had an attack, my left ankle, shit it hurts…. I twisted my ankle a few days ago but gout popped up too… Is there a thing when trauma is caused to an area or joint can set it off ? Well this has happened twice. I ate a huge steak as well lol… Now I’m paying… Lemon juice and baking soda is my best home made remedy yes it really works, I eat lots of cherries and berries too… Dehydration is a fact too..

  5. Thank you so much for the good info. I started to feel the pain in my wrist on thurs then come Fri a full gout attack was on. About two months ago I had an attack that took me out of work for three days. This time I was happy it was just before the weekend. Well my twelve year old son noticed the pain I was in and asked how he could help me so I told him to search the net for remedies. He then told me about the lemon juice with soda, which I had never heard of! He prepared the juice for me as I was getting ready for a long night of pain, discomfort, and no sleep. I drank the juice as directed and withing two hours I notice the difference. I was able to get some sleep and woke up with very little discomfort. I took the time to post this comment so that I could thank who ever posted this info and to help any other readers out there who are searching for relief.

  6. I was somewhat skeptical of these home remedies but I tried the apple cider vinegar and also included cherries into my diet and IT WORKED after 2 days. Thank you so much. I take the vinegar twice a day,it’s also great for digestion and acid reflux.

Thanks for this tip, it is a life savor.

    1. This morning woke up with so much pain in my left big toe could hardly walk. Looked on the computer and found this information . I told my husband to get me the vinegar and soda as he was coming home from church. He mixed the vinagar and soda in 8 oz. Of water and just a short time I can tell a difference. Still some pain but nothing compared to where I was.I thank God for you people it was like a miracle to me
The last battle I had with gout I was given a med.which cost me $109 other meds to go with it ,it still took me several days the meds cause a horrible headache that took me several days to get over even with the meds. So you guys testimony’s have been a miracle to me. Thank you and God bless.

  9. I really don’t like taking Allupurinol & Ibuprofen tabs because I’m afraid these will hurt my liver in the long run. So, I will now try the ACV. Thank you so much to those who selflessly shared their stories. God bless you!

  10. Good people thank you so much .i was now thinking that i have been bewitched.little did i know its gout.thank you let me try out Apple Cider Vinegar .thank let me assist my family also.god bless .

  11. Thanks for the information about the treatment of gout. I am a chronic gout patient for the last more than 20 years and not only me but there are several chronic gout patient in my locality. I will try the above method of treatment and on successful it will be a blessed for me as well to the people of my locality.

  12. I have gout for a few years and have been skeptical of medications and after effects. I saw these remedies in the internet and all I can say is WOW! The remedies really work. I am currently trying the ACV with honey and water. Awesome.

  13. What type of meats and seafood can I eat which will not cause a flare up of gout? Is red wine also a no, no? I am a social drinker but after reading the results here I see that what I am mixing my vodka with the juices have a lot of sugar fructose! I will need to stop using them. This is my first gout flare up but I lost my job over it because I lost 3 days of work due to the pain of not being able to walk and the side effects of the medicine. As my previous employer only allowes 4 sick days a year for that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Kathy – I think you should name and shame your former employer because the older an employee gets, the more chances of illness will occur. It is better to take time off and not spread any illness throughout the company. Your former employee is not exempt from illness and their turn will come and I bet they will take off more than four paltry days. That is disgusting! Poor you losing your job, what a mean employer

  14. I make a tonic that not only treats gout but also colds, flus, any arthritus, detoxifys body, balances PH & lots more. Most ingredients already mentioned already. Any of theses can be taken seperately.
    tsp turmeric
    tsp cinnamon
    tsp ginger
    tbsp apple cider vinegar
    tbsp honey
    half a lemon squeezed
    coconut milk
    warm water

Is there another type of soak or ointment for the burning? I’ll be trying the acv tomorrow. Thanks for all the help full info!!

  16. iam 23 year old but 45 kg weighted man suffering from high uric acid or gout. i have been facing this problem from 2008, for last 4 years iam suffering from continuous uric acid attack. my problem is knee swelling and pain. sometimes you may laugh here my uric acid cycle, it usually starts on sundays, increasing the swelling on mondays, reaching at top on tuesdays and then decreasing yet to reach to normal stage in late thursdays, then two days free for me…..

  17. I have been a gout sufferer for close on 17 years now. I have tried all sorts of experiments now and the one that suits me the best is apple cider vinegar. Every night before i go off to bed, I take 1 tablespoon of ACV and mix it with a glass of sparkling water and to kill the unsavoury taste of ACV, I put an orange flavoured effervescent vitamin c tablet and enjoy a pleasant , healthy and refreshing “beverage” drink. Job done!!!! I have not had an attack now for the last 15 months.

  18. I just experience my 2nd Gout attack in my left toe. The pain was SO sever I tried several remedies. 1. Concentrate Tart Cherry Juice in water. 2. Baking Soda and Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar together with water. 3. Ate an apple for Vitamin C. 4. Drank lots of water, including Alkaline and finally was able to sleep even walked better the next morning. Thank GOD for NATURAL remedies. AMEN!!!!

  19. I believe gout is more prevalent these days, due to the increase in sugar intake. It’s in all processed foods. Fructose not only produces uric acid through the liver, but also inhibits excretion through the kidneys. A twofold approach in raising uric acid levels. Please avoid added sugar.

  20. hi! thanks for the info…I really found your page useful and I will be writing something about it as a nutritional journalist. pls can u send ur name urgently to my mail cos that will be very important…I will be waiting for your reply

  23. Ramesh Ahuja

I am on an anticoagulant medication due to having undergone AVR ( Aotic Valve Regurgisation ) surgery in Jan. 2000 at AIIMS in Delhi. Have suffered a severe attack of swollen joints with acute pain after 3-4 years of surgery but on analyzing the same was cured with Zyloric as per recommendations of a good physician and following a diet with no intake of purine containing diets such as Cauliflower, Brinjals, Pumpkin and Mushrooms. Also I was advised to consume no or least Protines such as whole grain pulses, Rajmah/ white chane etc. It cured me of the problem almost fully and the status persisted for about another 5-6 years. It was then all of a sudden that one morning in the month of Aug. 2012 that I was immobilized altogether, not even able to go to the Bath room at my own. Since then I am suffering from the excess of Uric Acid ( beyond 5.0 ml ) which causes severe pain in my Ankle joints and due to which I can’t walk for more than a Km. or so at a stretch or can’t stand for more than half an hour at a stretch. I have to take a rest or break of 10-15 minutes for being able to walk or stand again. I have tried all the possible home remedies and allopathic medicines as recommended by any Ayurvedic or Allopathic practioner, except the ones told/advised above, such as ACV or Baking soda. Otherwise I have been taking freshly extracted Amla juice with honey, daily in the Morning since long ( the richest source of Vitamin C ) till it is available in the Market, otherwise I soak dried Amla in water for 24 hrs. and take the clear soaked water after mixing with a teaspoon of Honey in it.
Can any body share his/her similar experience of Goutic Pain due to high Uric Acid?
Doctors say it is due to in ability of our digestion system to break up the protiens we intake, thus leading to excess of purines causing formation of excess uric Acid. If it is so, then how can any home remedy cure this situation effectively, is not understood.
Any technically and logical remedy/suggestion shall be most appreciated.

  24. Hi my hubby suffers with gout and I found a few wonder treatments

  25. Ohh Dear God, Help me cure my stubborn Ignorant self.

I’m 42 and first encountered a gout attack when I was 40. At the time i was drinking 1 bottle of Red Wine per night. This day i was dehydrated and fitting a Kitchen. I was working outside in the summer sun. On this day my toe joint started to hurt. I thought it was my steel toe cap boot. The next day it was worse and it became difficult to walk. The 3rd day was excruciating. I could not sleep, or walk or have the bed sheets touch my foot. I did nothing at all to fix this problem. I didn’t go to Docs or change my diet. Within a week the symptoms disappeared, but there has always been a slight discomfort or lack of flexibility in my toe. Over the last 2 years I am still drinking 7 bottles of Red Wine per week. My toe joint is getting bigger (Tophi).
This Saturday the pain slowly started again. By Sunday It was becoming difficult to walk. By Sunday evening it was becoming very painful. By Monday it was full blown Gout attack. (but I have not drank since Friday and it is now Tuesday). My blood test from 2 years ago showed High Uric Acid levels.

I have been drinking Green tea, Lemon Juice, Fresh ginger Root. Baking Soda, Cellery Drink. Forever Living Aloe Vera Juice. Turmeric. Apple Cider Vinegar. Plenty of Water. I drank so much water and took so much of these ingredients yesterday that I had to run to the toilet!!!!!

I am still In agony!!! I did not get to bed till 5am this morning but could not sleep for the pain. Today I will keep tying with also bananas, cherries. Lets hope today is the day it starts to ease off.

  26. Just fighting an attack. Tried 250 ml of Orange Juice with 2 tsp of ACV.

In Cape Town, some of the older folks use Condom Oil, which they rub onto the affected area.

  27. Orange Juice and ACV. Just tried it as I had a minor gout attack.
    Seems to be working.
    Thanks for the advice.

Some of the older folk in Cape Town also rub some condom oil on the affected areas.

  28. Cherries are always liked, either sweet or sour. These contain anthocyanins, antioxident properties which can reduce inflammation as well as minimize gout flare-ups. Thanks for sharing such valuable healthy life tips.

  29. Baking soda is an excellent remedy for various ailments and is a popular home remedy. It has a mild alkaline effect, which helps prevent the peeling of the skin caused by gout.

  30. Lemon juice has an alkalizing effect and helps neutralize the effect of the uric acid that mixes in the blood of the patient suffering from gout.

  31. For folks that have good luck using raw apple cider vinegar then maybe make salads with acv and olive oil as a preventative. We have switched to this for our salad dressing and like it a lot. Nothing like acv and olive oil in a cucumber salad in the summer. Enjoy.

  32. I suggest adding celery and celery seed from the spice section to your list of gout remedies. (I just swallow about 1/2 tsp. of the seed with water) I read that from another source and it helped me.

  33. I have had my 4th gout attack in 8 months. I have been to the DR on Allopurinol for 2 months. I started getting a sore foot about a week ago. I tried the Cider Vineagar and baking soda with water not combined in the same glass and in 24 hours an improvement and now 48 hours it’s still getting better. Working for me at the moment.
