Asthma is a lung disease that causes difficulty breathing. Asthma can be either acute or chronic. Asthma attacks occur when there is an obstruction in the flow of air in the lungs.

asthma anatomy

The exact cause of this disease is not known but it can be triggered by allergies, air pollution, respiratory infections, emotions, weather conditions, sulfites in food and certain medications. Common symptoms include coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and chest tightness.

There are many medical treatments for asthma. Some simple natural remedies can also provide relief from symptoms.

home remedies for asthma

Here are the top 10 home remedies for asthma. Also, consult your doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.

1. Ginger

Ginger is a well-known natural treatment for various ailments including asthma. Researchers have found that it can help reduce airway inflammation and inhibit airway contraction.

Plus, studies indicate that it has compounds that may enhance the muscle relaxant effects of certain asthma drugs.

asthma natural cure

  • Mix equal quantities of ginger juice, pomegranate juice and honey. Consume one tablespoon of this mixture two or three times a day.
  • Alternatively, you can mix one teaspoon of ground ginger in one and a half cups of water and take one tablespoon of this mixture at bedtime.
  • Cut one inch of ginger into small pieces and add it to a pot of boiling water. Let it steep for five minutes, allow it to cool down and then drink it.
  • To detoxify your lungs, prepare a fenugreek decoction by boiling one tablespoon of fenugreek seeds in a cup of water and mixing one teaspoon each of ginger juice and honey in it. Drink this solution every morning and evening.
  • You can also eat raw ginger mixed with salt.

2. Mustard Oil

asthma home remedy

When having an asthma attack, massaging with mustard oil can help clear the respiratory passages and restore normal breathing.

  1. Heat some mustard oil with a little camphor.
  2. Transfer it in a bowl and when it is comfortably warm, gently rub it on the chest and upper back and massage.
  3. Do this several times a day until the symptoms subside.

3. Figs

asthma fig remedy

The nutritional properties of figs promote respiratory health and help drain phlegm and alleviate breathing difficulties.

  1. Wash three dried figs and soak them in a cup of water overnight.
  2. In the morning, eat the soaked figs and drink the fig water on an empty stomach.

Continue this home treatment for a couple of months.

4. Garlic

The following garlic remedy can help clear congestion in your lungs during the early stages of asthma.

  1. Boil two or three cloves in one-quarter cup of milk.
  2. Allow it to cool to room temperature and then drink it.

5. Coffee

The caffeine in regular coffee can help control asthma attacks because it acts as a bronchodilator. Hot coffee helps relax and clear the airways to help you to breathe easier. The stronger the coffee, the better the result.

But try not to drink more than three cups of black coffee in a day. If you do not like coffee, you can opt for a cup of hot black tea. Do not use caffeine as a regular treatment though.

6. Eucalyptus Oil

Pure eucalyptus oil is an effective treatment for asthma symptoms because of its decongestant properties. Research indicates that it has a chemical called eucalyptol which can help break up mucus.

  • Just put a few drops of eucalyptus oil on a paper towel and keep it by your head when sleeping so that you breathe in the aroma.
  • You can also put two to three drops of eucalyptus oil in a pot of boiling water and breathe in the steam. Try to take deep breaths for faster results.

      1. I’m curious about the use of milk with garlic (boil then drink it) I’ve always heard milk increases mucus production & also makes mucus more tenacious. I have issues w excessive mucus at times so i am wondering if the milk is absolutely necessary or can I substitute water or another liquid instead of the milk?
If I do use milk I am wondering how long to boil the milk/garlic because milk thickens up when boiled. I’m sorry to ask such dumb questions but I was just wondering what your thoughts may be about the use of milk and if it can be substituted with another liquid & still get the desired effects.
        thanks a bunch,
        John

        1. Substitute dairy milk with soy bean, (Soya,) milk. I do this, before bedtime. It works wonders! I have severe asthma from work related conditions. Dairy milk during breakfast and lunch is fine yet avoid snack time and definitely supper time or you will never sleep well. Lying down caused a tight, heavy feeling that gagged my breathing. It pained me to breathe and left me awake for hours. Also, powdered Soybean Milk is fine, as well. It is as good, when hot or cold but not when boiled.

        2. Morning swallow a small piece of garlic .This will reduce chest congestion. Take only a small piece as it’s supposed to be quite hot .cud cause acidity.figs also help a lot .3 figs. garlic honey excellent combination. Yes milk does increase mucous. Avoid . Boiling garlic will kll it’s medicinal property.

        3. I agree…I think dairy products do increase mucus. I make a tea using ginger, crushed garlic, honey and lemon….which all seem to be on the list. I do know that almond milk has a relaxing effect, maybe it could be used.

      2. Dear Mr. Kunwar Singh , how can you suggest a cow`s milk to a person that soffer of Asthma ?, when is scientific proved that the cow-milk is the worst drink , for this type of hard desease ???? there is many scientific proves that one of the first problem for Asthmatics people is the may allergies coused from Milk……..!!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Raw goat’s milk is much easier to digest and never drink conventional cow’s milk…only raw cow’s milk if tolerated. Soy milk is GMO…unless labeled Non Gmo Project Verified.

      1. Wheat is GMO, most animals are GMO, you probably pay twice as much for organic GMO free stuff and you don’t even know what you’re talking about.. Morons you and the lot just like you

    2. Personally I find the garlic in milk remedy suspect on many levels. First of all, much of the compound that has the most healing potential in garlic is broken down quickly during cooking. Second of all, milk is high in calcium and does tend to increase phlegm production. Cooked milk tends to promote inflammation, especially.

Personally I use magnesium, which has almost completely erased all asthma symptoms from my life. I say almost because severe exposures to allergens can still trigger breathing issues for me, and so can viruses, but the chronic tightness I was taking four drugs to combat is gone on a simple dose of magnesium citrate every day. Many people in my life have found the same thing to be true…. it works within half an hour if it is going to work at all and does not preclude other remedies. However, the higher your calcium intake, the higher your magnesium intake needs to be. It works by relaxing the smooth muscles and reducing inflammation.

      1. Please tell me what ratio of magnesium citrate to calcium you take for asthma. I am desperate to find something that works other than drugs from the pharmaceutical industry!

  1. /sir,

      1. Are you a doctor Peter? I’m not a doctor, I’m just asking as I’m in the same dire straights as Manish. Yet my doctor said that there was no way that I had COPD (as I’m not a smoker), and that I in fact have asthma.

FYI Cow’s urine is outrageous, and is not healthy for anything.

        1. I don’t know you or your doctor and you may indeed just have asthma, but you do not have to be or ever have to have been a smoker to have COPD. My mom has COPD and was never a smoker. If you have asthma that goes untreated or inadequately treated over a course of years, you can end up with COPD.

    1. Camel urine it is and it is the best solution the best and fastes but the camel has to live in desert not in form
I know people who cured themselves by this after using all the remedies

  2. I will agree with everything but not Lemon. It might increase your immunity, but during an asthma attack, it badly worsens your condition. I have suffered from asthma for 15 years at a stretch and I know how badly Lemon, Curd, banana etc can worsen your condition.

      1. Hi, Lemon works great for me. I’ve had asthma since I was 5 years old. I’m 62
now and fresh squeezed lemon works great. It dissipates the phlegm. Everyone is different, I get that.

  3. I just have a question, last week my son was coughing, have shortness of breath and I took him to hospital and they say it is asthma and I want to try home remedies and he is two and half year old which is best for him. Thank you.

      1. Dear Laurence,

There are natural remedies for asthma, do not believe when they say “there is no cure for asthma.” I’ve been there, was asthmatic since childhood until my 30′s, now I’m totally cured all my life.
        1. Live on a clean, fresh air environment such as near the beach or non-polluted place. 2. Avoid dust, smoke, vehicle fumes. 3. Eat healthy foods esp. fish and brown whole wheat bread. 4. Regular sports such as tennis, basketball, beach swimming, biking, but on a clean air environment.

Hope the above, as far as I can remember can help all others suffering.
        mandy m.

        1. Above statement is true, I could like to add a little to it, since childhood this trouble me a lot n u got to have courage to fight it back. Avoid icecream or anything cold like ice n drinking light black tea with few drops of lemon during the day n nite will be helpful. Avoid solid food, eat liquid food like village red rice water n soup with little lime n light black tea n biscuits toast is a good diet for the entire day of two to three days until it cures. A little secret I could like to share is that even Frog backbone soup is good for Asthma, just boil it with frog backbone n little salt or just cook like soup n eat the backbone flesh. The second secret is when your child is very young n u know if asthmatic then collect the child pee in the morning only in small bowl n mix little of the child pee in the morning tea without the knowledge of the child n make him drink it, this is a sure n strong cure. Well put your child into lots of sports activities like cycling, soccer n jogging. When they grow this asthma will disappear n will make person to fight his own problem. I’m the living example n 53 yrs still growing strong n by God’s grace never been to any hospital n clinics so far.

        2. Yes. Asthma is curable. I suffered for three months and allopathic tratment will not help you. But I tried and got cured with Ayurvedic treatment. Now I am free from Asthma.

      2. Asthma is a very critical health issue and these home remedies can never cure it permanently but might bring relief up to some extent. I have been success in curing 22 year old asthma in the past of a lady in the USA in the past with the help of a single herbal nutrition blessed with ultimate holistic healing qualities. I am treating another 45 year asthma patient in India and will let you know after she finds a permanent solution of her sufferings.

          1. Praveen,
I have asthma since I was 7 years old. I suffered with coughing & wheezing all my life. Every time I catch a cold my coughing & wheezing always come back. But please try the figs remedies. It works for me so it will work for you too.
Also try not to eat or drink anything cold because it will makes you cough more.
            Take care.

        1. I am shocked that nobody has mention water. I find it difficult to believe that after all these options, you could just make sure your drinking enough water…

      3. You please regularly give ur child in the morning/ night without gap
One cup of milk, add 1teaspoon( start half) turmeric and 1 honey. Shake well n is ready to drink.
You can practice it at night time as last drink too.

    1. Dear Getu,

There are solutions for your son’s asthma, do not believe when they say “there is no cure for asthma.” I’ve been there, was asthmatic since childhood until my 30’s, now I’m totally cured all my life.

  5. When my son has an asthma attack I have him sit in a hot tub with eucalyptus oil (about 10 drops) and inhale the steam. If one is sensitive to chlorine and water additives, should use a water filter for the shower/bath. I also give him a strong dose of vitamin C (1 gram). He is 10 years old. I found that magnesium oxide has played a part in relieving his symptoms as well, he may be deficient and have a higher requirement, but it does help. I think a big part of that is it helps him relax (great for the nerves). I give him about 400 mg or one “0” size capsule. Lastly, I give him a “bronchitis” tablet by Heel brand, a homeopathic remedy, every 15 minutes until he is calm and breathing with ease. Usually he only needs one or two of these. Make sure mouth is clear of food or drinks (not including water) when giving sublingual homeopathic remedies for effectiveness. And one more thing I give him is a spoon of honey, which he really likes; this helps sooth the throat and loosen phlegm – no honey for babies/or anyone allergic to honey.

The vitamin C can be repeated as well, wonderful for clearing out the phlegm and inflammation.

This also helps with the constant sighing symptoms, I believe this is a mild form of asthma.

    I hope this helps someone!!

    1. Thank you so much for the tips. My son is 5 and has allergic asthma. I’ve never heard of the Heel brand, but have used Lobelia (the main ingredient of the product you suggested) before, with great results. I’m excited to try the tablets. Thanks again!

      1. N Colby,
I have asthma since I was 7 years old. I suffered with coughing & wheezing all my life. Every time I catch a cold my coughing & wheezing always come back. But please try the figs remedies. It works for me so it will work for your son too. Also try not to give your son any food or drinks that is cold because it will makes him cough more.
        Good Luck.

  6. I just used your tips just now n I can already feel the difference. You. Guys it works. I personally guarantee that!

  7. Mustard oil and mustard seeds both can be used for treating sever asthma attack. the oil can also be mixed with a bit of coconut oil and massaged on the chest ( it stops the lungs from wheezing and prevents asthma attack at night during sleep).
also, eating food rich with selinium can reduce the chance of having an asthma attack. food rich with selinium: brazil Nuts, sunflower seeds
Fish (tuna, halibut, sardines, flounder, salmon)
Shellfish (oysters, mussels, shrimp, clams, scallops)

    1. Thank you Sana. I have asthma since I was 7 years old. I am now 66 years old. I get wheezing & coughing every time I catch a cold. Lately I have been catching a lot of cold almost like once a month. Your remedy sound great. I will try it. Thanks again.

      1. Try one more thing. Boil some fresh SAGE leaves with a couple pieces of sliced ginger, let it cool then drink it the whole day. This works wonders for allergies and asthma. Eat lots of cool vegetables, fresh (can be juiced mixed with apples or carrots), such as parsley, cilantro, celery, zucchini etc. Good luck.

  8. Thank you for the information it has help me and it
Has save my life!! I recommend this site to anyone who suffer from asthma!!!!

  9. Mixture of garlic, black pepper, ginger, alligator pepper and honey has been very helpful to me ! I grind them together and mix with honey. I use it first thing in the morning when I’m awake from sleep and as many times as possible. I hope it’d be helpful to others too.

  10. Thanks for this wonderful 10 step home remedies. Most people never have time to help out another human being so I thank you for that.

  12. Is there something that I can give my daughter everyday for asthma? She uses an inhaler right now and I’m looking for an alternative to that.

    1. Dear Robin Smith,

There are natural solutions for your daughter’s asthma, do not believe when they say “there is no cure for asthma.” I’ve been there, was asthmatic since childhood until my 30’s, now I’m totally cured all my life.

    2. Dear Robin Smith.
Is your daughter young, If yes try this, no harm in any way, i believe.

I was also having this disease, I had Allopathic medicine, Ayurveda medici
ne, and even Homeo, I don’t know which medicine worked on me.

Believe me, I had to curse myself for living.. till about my 28 of years But i am happy that i am free form it, I really don’t know which has helped me in this.

      1. I had Tedral SA and Asthalin 4mg, and I got relief after few hours, and got a better sleep. ( these are outdated i suppose )
      2. I had aurvedic midecine form the aurvedic goverment hospital, But it was a course ( powderd medicine with pure honey ) —- stopped having it, no satisfaction.
      3. I had homeo, I hope it might worked possibly for 40% ( liquid form Blatta Ori Q, arsenic alb , powder of arsenic alb and what not.
      4. I had Mustard seed oil, warm applied on a leaf and to the chest for say 3 to 4 times a day when symtoms present, ( may be this might have also worked on me, As we see Mustard seed oil is been used in these messages also)
      5. I had Frog hind legs, three to four pair, fried it with little oil, pepper Powder, chilli powder, and salt (all as per your taste only ), these was all I had from my life for the lastime and later I had some sensation of asthma but may be for few minutes, not for long months and vanished. Now i look back i am happy to have my life back.

      Best of luck.

      1. Thank you for all of the comments. I have a six year old grandson who has asthma. I am very concerned about the side effects of his current medications, which in my opinion causes him to be very hyper when he takes it. He has been hospitalized at least 3 times since birth because of the asthma so we don’t want to take any chances. But I sure would like to know if a more natural approach to his treatment would help him to be less energetic.

  13. I looked up ‘coughs’ and tried 1 teaspoon of ground ginger with 1 teaspoon of honey in a cup of boiling water and sipped away my nagging chesty cough, which wouldn’t go away for 2 nights!
I also suffer from asthma, and as I am writing this and sipping away, I have finally stopped coughing.

  14. the best thing boil garlic with orange in microwave 1 min then let it cool down than give him 10 ml is inf i do same to my child and getting better.

  15. Thanks for your remedies. And everyone if you or your child has asthma at first find out what triggering the attack, and prevent it. Whoever had asthma stay away from dust, cotton, birds specially pigeon, furry animals like rabbits, cats etc as those are triggers for all. My mother has asthma which triggered from home dust, fur, cold. Sometimes it could be the food. My boyfriend had asthma since childhood but his parents couldn’t find out what triggering it for almost 6-7 years, then they find out it causing from drinking milk, which every children eat. And later he had allergy test which found out 15 other foods can cause him asthma attack also smoking, sweating, cotton, home dust. I heard nuts could be so dangerous for some child patient that it could cause death from attack. So take care everyone.

  16. I am allergic to chocolates (cocoa), green seedless grapes (tiny sweet ones), banana. . I know of a kid who is allergic to nuts (cashew). Just letting people know what can trigger asthma in some.

    1. That’s weird! I’m allergic to chocolate, green grapes & bananas too (and chicken), and my daughter is allergic to cashews!
I’ve been suffering with persistent, mild asthma for 7 months now. I’m on Singular & Asthmanex and nothing is helping the constant tightness in my chest 🙁

  17. I have asthma and even my 2 years child is found with allergi inside lungs can you please suggest a daily home remidy for her

      1. “”Eucalyptus oil is commonly used to treat colds, coughs and congestion. It can help to break up phlegm and mucus. It comes in all kinds of forms including tinctures and teas as well as topical oils. Those with asthma should probably not use eucalyptus oil routinely, because it may trigger an asthma attack. It is important to consult with your doctor before using any herbal preparation”

  22. yeah u’all may have spoken other people’s minds….none d less, finding allergens will be best…and parents should be careful on how they expose their children anywhere in the world…cus I had my first attack as a kid due to exposure into cold….ever since I’ve been having attacks, but I thank God.I’m gonna give a try to d honey mixture and snail fluid

    1. hello friend you made mention of honey and snail fluid I heard it works wonders ,but don’t know the dosage and complete mixture

  23. I have suffered from asthma since I was a child. I used to get asthma attacks frequently as well as sinus infections. Over a year ago, under the care of a nutritionist, I started a new eating plan. I eat lean meats, veggies, and beans, six times a day and drink 12 cups of hot water a day. I cut dairy, sugar, caffeine, sweets, processed foods, and fruits. I eat three small snacks and Three regular meals. Since being on this eating plan, I have not needed to take my asthma and allergy medicine, my cholesterol has improved, and i have lost weight. I think the foods we eat can cause a lot of havoc with our bodies. Be well.

  24. I have a 2yo & found licorice in liquid form fixed her breathing & broke down her mucus to nothing. Surprisingly this is not mentioned above……

  25. I have been told I have asthma for a few years . Before I would just get an attack if someone was smoking or if there were fires around the state. But for the last 3 weeks I can’t leave my house without feeling out of breath, getting up to go to the restroom or to the kitchen exhaust me. My oxygen levels are ok, but I have rapid breathing as if I just ran a marathon. I am on 3 inhalers, nebulizer every 4 hours, prednisone, and 2 different allergy medicine. I have read Asthma is worse at night and in mornings, but that is when I can breath better. Does anyone have helpful thoughts on all this.

    1. Dear Regiena
With the help of a nutritionist, I recommend you start on a new eating plan. Eat lean meats, veggies, and beans, six times a day and drink 12 cups of hot water a day. Cut on dairy, sugar, caffeine, sweets, processed foods, and fruits and lots of them.

  26. Hi have been on inhaler since I was 12 and am trying this natural home remdy starting from dis minute so have just taken honey with hot water and am feeling better

  27. use a small table fan near the face get more natural oxygen forced into your lungs when u feel breathless it may help and mostly take neb as the safest medicane with no side effects. just use the medicane in it which suites you the best and which u feel works on you.best of luck

  28. asthma has no cure. but it can be controlled. try drinking Pure Barley . it took me two months to control my asthma. drink 3grms./day for 2 months then 2 to 3 times a week
for maintenance. i used SANTE BARLEY ….

  29. Great stuff… I have recently found that lack of sleep, lack of showers and stress are the worst, besides second hand cigarette smoke.. even the scent is enough to kick it off. I have been having terrible attacks and ran out of inhalers so had to assess, and so I put myself first for the first time and relaxed, exercised and I found that because of my deviated septum from broken nose cause me to breath through the mouth which does not have hair follicles to moisturize the air. I use a dust mask to reuse some of the moisture and it really helps especially at night, honey and cinnamon in the coffee has worked as we speak. I bubble the drink as I sip it and inhale it.. “slurping” the moisture with the cinnamon and honey seems to be doing a good job.. thanks.. and now to actually go to sleep before 5am…. oh and playing music seems to relieve stress too. Blessings all

  30. Hi I have looked at all your comments and advice on asthma can anyone tell me do u chop the ginger up really small and then mix with the honey?.

  31. Rapeseed is another trigger that is known to cause asthma. Check all of the ingredients in bread, chocolate ( Cadbury’s use an emulsifier e442 that has Rapeseed in ) and other foods. Avoid strong smelling chemicals such as washing up liquid, laundry powder / liquid, bathroom cleaning products and bleach.

  32. I HAVE BEEN SUFFERING MY ASTHMA LATELY….ITS BECAUSE OF THE PLEGHM AND I’D BEEN TAKING 10 DAYS OF ANTIBIOTIC TO EASE THE ITCHINESS IN MY THROAT….YET IT SEEMS THAT IT HAS NO EFFECT ..SO I’VE BEEN USING A NEBULIZER EVERY NIGHT TO EASE THE HARDNESS OF BREATHING…I GUESS I’LL TRY TO USE THE GINGER.. HOPE IT WOULD HELP ME TO LESSEN THE ASTHMA ATTACK….TNX FOR THIS….

    1. CLAUDETTE C. MANGIBIN
Yes ginger juice with honey really helps for itchy throat and pleghm. I give this to my daughter whenever her cough and cold starts.

  33. I have an allergic rhinitis then later it turned to asthma. Until now im always suffering dfficulty in breathing and colds with runny nose.thanks for the ginger snd honey it really helps.

  34. I am surprised not to see peppermint on the list… I’ve always used peppermint candy for a remedy. It works almost instantly so just thought I’d put that out there for all those asthmatics like myself.

  35. Great suggestions!
    My inhaler is empty, it’s allergy season and I am having an attack. The following helped me dramatically;
I boiled thin slices of ginger in water, added a peppermint tea bag and a tbl spoon of honey. I sipped that while I stood next to the stove and boiled more raw ginger slices and breathed in the vapors. I am feeling much calmer and a lot of relief from a tightened chest and heavy wheezing. I find leaning over the pot as the ginger boils to be the best remedy. Thank you!

  37. I’ve heard that putting a saucer of vinegar with brown paper in the room will also help. Also, lying on your front will help your lungs to drain and enable you to get rid of any mucus build up. Animals with feathers or fur are known to trigger symptoms as is perfume or strong smelling deoderants / chemicals.

    1. Hi jenny,,
Was also told as a child that lying on ones front would help with asthma. Draining the lungs thing would seem to make sense, wouldn’t it, from a lay persons perspective; Gravity is not making mucous a weight on the lungs. I know I find it a relief whatever the reason.

      1. when i was young i also found out that laying on your chest and folding your legs under you did help me in bed. it seemed to open my lungs up a bit and help to breathe better. this works for sure but doesnt totally cure the lack of air flow, my wife said it is called childs pose in yoga. hope it helps someone 🙂

i am also trying honey, lemon and ginseng tea now, even as I type this. I also added a tspoon of honey and some black pepper to the drink. I am on my second tea now. Wish we had ginger here but we dont. My ventolin inhaler wasnt working too good for me tonight so I stumbled on this website. I took a pen and paper and wrote down all of the natural cures. I will try all of them for sure. I have had asthma since I was very young and hospitalized a few times as well, not for many years though. It seems to only act up now when I get sick or get a virus. It sucks because I know that its coming… maybe now I can try the remedies before it acts up. Thanks everyone and good luck.

  38. I have an 8 year old an I put honey on a warm towel and that helps to loosen my child up enough to get to a doctor

  39. Feeling very ill with asthma. So wanting non-chemicals treatment. Have just inhaled few drops of Euchalyptus oil on a kitchen towel whilst waiting for water to boil and steep 1 inch organic ginger as suggested (I peeled it first.)
Took tiny taste of honey to ease cough a few times whilst waiting for ginger to steep. Only managed a bit as chest mucous was making me feel sick as it was. After 5 minutes as suggested, drank third of ginger water, inhaled more eucalyptus, bit more honey. Within 10 minutes an improvement. AMAZING!!
Felt well enough to water garden (fresh air, deep breaths). Lots of nose blowing, thank goodness, mucous clearing, cough going too. Chewed quarter of the piece of ginger too but didn’t swallow strawy bit you end up with, bit too gingery for tummy at moment, which I think also helped.
Have been hospitalised as child with asthma twice so know how really ill one can feel. After three quarters of an hour feel virtually completely clear. Astonished!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

  40. Whoops, just remembered. Took 500mg chewable Vitamin C about 30 minutes before started Eucalyptus, ginger, honey treatment.

  41. Hi, update. After couple hours symptoms returned, Asthma as I know is always worse at night. Despondent, I halfheartedly chewed a bit of the presteeped ginger n inhaled a bit more eucalyptus, knowing I should make another ginger drink but was too fed up with it all to bother. (I know, defeatist, but Asthma takes it out of you, it really does). Hoping for a bit if strength resurrection overnight, took a sachet of Iron n went to bed.
Up at 3am with dreadful bunged up sinuses tho mercifully chest was clear. Stumbled around not being able to face the effort of making the ginger drink, I put a bit of Vicks emollient on my sternum area and inhaled some eucalyptus on a tissue. Feeling hungry (it takes a lot of energy this “breathing to stay alive” thing) had some organic oats (which for me calm my system after an allergic reaction so thought would try now too), with sheeps milk (very good if, like me, you’re cows dairy intolerant) and some organic currants for energy. Still feeling very bunged up and unhappy, gave up, took a Piriton antihistamine and fell asleep on the sofa, noticing wearily I was now a bit wheezy. Oh dear, that’s ALL I need.
Morning, woke with clear chest, thank you God, but the most whacking headache. Could not be bothered with making wonderful ginger drink, just felt too clogged to focus, so hit the wonderful strong coffee suggestion above which, for me, has even shifted migraines in the past. Half a cup of coffee later pain greatly reduced and sinuses starting to clear. Feel strong enough to fix oat (calming for me) breakfast, as above, again and eat in garden where I try to breeeeeaaaaathe deeeeeeeeeeep as much a possible. Potter about a bit, getting the bronchials moving, they can tighten up through stress and fear at not beng able to breathe very well. Pottering about was also a helpful distraction. Feeling stronger, I take a shower, the warm, damp air; very settling for my bronchial tubes, very soothing. I add a couple of drops of Lime aromatherapy oil to a tissue n leave it on the side, a mistake really as thought it was eucalyptus oil but for me it did the same job of making the soothing damp air a nice scent to breathe deeply down into my lungs.
Out of shower. Make another strong coffee but steam from shower seems to have loosened mucous in my sinuses, alleviating the dense pain, a great relief which has an overall detensing effect which also helps my general breathing. Whew!! Feel heaps better and decide don’t really need the extra.caffein after all.
Now going for bracing walk. Breeeeeeeaaaaaaaath!!
    Much love all xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  42. Hi, Have had asthma, mostly allergic, for half my life which was exacerbated after having a surgery at 40, Spoke with a doc and asked why it got so very bad and he said the anesthesia was an insult to the lungs. Have talked to many others and they stated they never had asthma until post surgery. Also, when we were kids and to this day, when you have a cough, cut an onion in half, put it next to your bed and your cough will be gone and you will have a good night of rest. I tell this to many folks and some of them look at me funny but too bad, their loss. Try it, it works. Mary

  45. Drinking lots of water, exercise, and eating simple healthful, non processed foods will all work wonders. Try to take meat, dairy, most oils out of the diet, too. Many remedies work to a degree, but you need to do this first and foremost; it is the foundation of curing most ailments.

  51. I hope someone will advise me based on his / her personal experiences. My son aged 12 years is having asthma recently diagnosed by a Pulmonologist. He was suffering with persistent cough for the last one month or so and antibiotics had a little impact. So the Pulmonologist has advised him an inhaler two puffs twice a day , an allergy tablet daily and little steriods with an antibiotic suspenison. The most worried thing for me is his severe cough all the day long and at during nights. Its a productive cough and he throws mucus after every cough attack. The Pulmonologist has advised that the Inhaler and the allergy tablets will have to be continued for sometime. Note: My son is not too much healthy may be having weak immune system due to which he often remains sick i.e. chest congestion and cough since his birth. Please advise me some best home remedies for his cough treatment. Thanks.

  53. For all those people who made fun of cow urine and don’t realise the importance of what it can do to the health. Please do some research on it. It helps in various deceases including asthama. I have seen people in worse situation who have survived just with cow’s urine, milk which numerous medicines couldnt do. I know it sounds fake, stupid but its a fact. Ancient books, researches have proven how important it is. But clearly it doesn’t sound real so why would anyone bother. Please do some research before commenting is all im saying. Thanks

  54. I’ve had asthma since I’m five years old, now I’m 62. Fresh squeeze lemon works great for me, it dissipates the phlegm. I know everyone is different, I get that.

  55. Good day everyone,

I’m Thariq Aziz from India, Since my childhood i was having breathing trouble. While climbing stairs, while lifting weight, even while performing mild exercises i felt exhausted, become tired very quick and sometimes gasp for oxygen.

And now i’m completely alright with one simple method:

Took boiled water with “Cumin, Ginger and honey” both in the morning and at night before going to bed.

Believe me within 15 days, i could able to carry a load of 20 kg’s on my shoulder up to 3rd floor of my building.

    1. I am tired ….can’t walk fast or climb staircases ,,,,, I am going to use the combination of Cumin , Ginger and Honey…. Thanks everyone for sharing what worked …

  56. WOW! Avoid coffee at all costs. Sends me other way. In fact caffeine all together. Also dark spirits like dark rum does me no favours. ?. What works for me is juicing 2 apples, an orange, and 2 sticks of celery every morning. I work early in the morning and the air is heavy. Sometime when I am cycling to work I really struggle, especially with the pollen in spring./summer. This fresh juice workers well for me. Did it every morning, but now found 3 times a week is enough.
I’ve also found having a lower heart rate and staying fit is a must. 11 month ago I smashed my ankle at football/soccer. And couldn’t do any exercise. With the same diet and no other changes, I’ve really been dependent on my both inhalers. Some how I feel like being dependent on the inhalers has made me worse off!?

  59. I have more trouble in cause of asthma how can I cure.Sometime water through the nose continue how can I stop this I am very trouble

  60. Thanks for all these contributions. Even though I have read a lot about asthma, these sound more real since they are coming from individuals. I just gave my 11 year old son who is asthmatic ginger, garlic, honey, coffee, turmeric. I made him inhale ginger steam, I used the same hot ginger to make him black coffee mixed with honey. I will put onions by his bedside right away as I have read here. I do hope he gets a sound sleep. Thanks a bunch.

  61. A lot of asthma symptoms comes from allergies. Good natural remedy increasing immunity is onion.

To make onion syrup cut onions and put them with a sugar layer by layer in a bowl. Two spoons everyday is very helpful in treating cough and increasing immunity in general.

Also very overlooked is an onion skin (the brown external). You can make some kind of tea with it, taste is surprisingly good, and it doesn’t smell like onion at all.

  62. Magnesium can also help…choose a form that is easy to digest such as capsules of magnesium citrate and malate. Also soak in a warm tub of water with magnesium flakes or epsom salts which are high in magnesium. Magnesium helps relieve tension especially in the muscles. Many people who are asthmatics are magnesium deficient.

  63. Hi Every one, I Suffered from asthama from last 3 years. My age 25 years. I consult lot of doctors. but no solution. How I use perfect natural remedies. please help me…..

  64. I’m SO glad I found this site tonight. I have been having asthma problems several times a day recently, but I don’t want to use my inhaler that often. I was looking for natural remedies that wise people have discovered over the years.

I discovered that luckily we just happened to have organic ginger powder & honey, so I immediately boiled up some water & poured it over ginger (1 TB) & honey (1TB) & starting sipping it & immediately felt relief! 30 minutes later, no more wheezing or tight chest! Wow!

I also want to try some of the other suggested remedies so I can see what works for me — and variety is always good. Figs & pomegranate sound wonderful. And eucalyptus, yes. I am also going to get fresh ginger to boil up as tea when I pick up figs, etc.

This has been a life-saver this evening! Thank you, kind people, for taking time to share your home renedies — enough of these dangerous & expensive drugs!

  65. my mother suffer asthma, she was cured with oregano, lemon and pure honey. mixed together and drink more water every day..
